Spinnaker Tower

Taller than the London Eye at a sky-kissing 170 metres, the Spinnaker Tower stands proudly over Portsmouth Harbour, elegantly-shaped with an architectural nod to the spinnaker sail of its namesake, and offering a 350° panoramic view of the city at height closer to the clouds than the likes of Blackpool Tower and Big Ben.

The views from the three viewing decks, which feature the renowned Café in the Clouds and a glass floor daring you to walk on air 100 metres above sea level, stretch for 23 miles out to the horizon — breathtaking by day, and glitteringly lethargic by night.

Down at ground level, there’s the Waterfront Café and a gift shop full of souvenirs to immortalise your visit, and just outside is Gunwharf Quays, one of the biggest shopping centres in the south of England.

History

Construction of this striking structure commenced in November 2001, with the tower finally opening to the public in October 2005. The concrete used to build the Tower would fill five-and-a-half Olympic-sized swimming pools, and its total weight exceeds 30,000 tonnes.

The Spinnaker Tower was built as part of the centrepiece of the Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour Project, and has become Portsmouth’s most prominent landmark. Visible beyond 23 miles away, it dramatically overlooks Portsmouth Harbour, Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, City Centre, and all of Portsmouth and its neighbouring towns and suburbs.
