Southsea Rowing Club

Southsea Rowing Club, headquartered in a modest building between Mozzarella Joes and the Hovertravel terminal, have been sited on Southsea Beach since 1860, providing a competitive, fun, and healthy environment for rowers of varying ages and abilities.

Whether you’re returning to rowing after university, are an accomplished rower, or are just getting started, Southsea Rowing Club have a place for you. All the members are friendly, with senior crews bringing years of experience to the team and junior crews infusing the clubhouse with fresh excitement, enthusiasm, and energy.

It’s one of the oldest rowing clubs in the UK. Southsea Rowing Club’s first home was an unassuming wooden hut, founded by four local rowing enthusiasts. When races against other clubs began in the 1870s, the small wooden hut was replaced with a larger boathouse. In 1875, Southsea Rowing Club’s crews won all but one racing events!

Today, Southsea Rowing Club are housed in a brick building with the boathouse and changing rooms on the first floor and fitness facilities, social areas, and a fully-stocked bar on the second floor. End-to-end windows offer stunning Solent views.

Every summer, the Southsea shoreline is filled with rowing craft for the club’s annual Southsea Regatta, with classes including pairs, fours, and sculls, and craft ranging from coxswained fours to singles — a beginner through expert transition.

The first-floor boathouse is a beautiful sight to behold. Racks and walls lined with sleek wooden boats adorned with the names of renowned club members, repair tools, and oars painted in Southsea Rowing Club’s sky blue, white, and navy blue livery.

Southsea Rowing Club are partnered with British Rowing, the UK’s national governing body for rowing, and because Portsmouth is in the centre of the south coast, the club is affiliated with both the Coastal Amateur Rowing Association (CARA) and the Hampshire and Dorset Amateur Rowing Association. The club compete in regattas all along the coast, east to Dover and west to Swanage.

Want to learn to row? Southsea Rowing Club run training sessions on Mondays through Thursdays at 6:00pm, with no proper experience necessary, aside from being a capable swimmer. You can learn to row for £15.00 per month, or £11.25 if you’re aged between 14 and 18. There are also special rates for full-time students which equate to £50.00 per year.
