No. 6 Cinema is Portsmouth’s only independent filmhouse, situated in Boathouse No. 6 of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, a building which itself is steeped in historic culture having been built long ago in 1846. No. 6 is the proud home to the largest screen on the south coast.

Within the boathouse’s Grade II-listed walls is a 275-seat theatre and state-of-the-art auditorium which was first completed and opened to the public in 2001 and has enjoyed thriving trade ever since.

Considered in Portsmouth and beyond as quite the hidden treasure, No. 6 follows a policy of screening world cinema’s latest and greatest releases, whilst also mixing an eclectic blend of cult classics into their ever-refreshing programme of screenings.

Following a brief closure in 2008/2009, the renowned filmhouse relaunched bigger and better than ever on 18th July 2009, bringing a selection of refreshments to the welcoming lobby, including wine and soft drinks.

Regular screenings aside, No.6 Cinema also often runs special evenings in commemoration of certain movies, directors, or even seasonal genres, such as festive flicks at Christmastime or frightening horror films around Hallowe’en.

Bookings for No. 6 Cinema screenings can be made online through the filmhouse’s website, or by turning up on the night, though pre-bookings are advised for titles further up the blockbuster scale!

Seats are not allocated, and are occupied on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The auditorium and toilets are accessible for wheelchair users. Anyone requiring extra assistance should contact the cinema beforehand to let them know.

No. 6 Cinema is accessed by entering Portsmouth Historic Dockyard through the Victory Gate in Portsea, next to the HMS Warrior. After entering, take the first right into College Road and walk 50 metres to the side entrance of Boathouse No. 6, which is marked on most nights by No.6 Cinema signage.
