Listeners of the TLMedia podcast will have heard first that Samantha Worsey, the entrepreneur behind natural skincare brand Southsea Bathing Hut, has opened an apothecary-style shop on Albert Road!

This exciting new step in Samantha’s journey comes just three years after she began reviving Portsmouth and Southsea’s soapmaking legacy in 2015, and follows many days spent trading on stalls at street markets, trade shows, and festivals.

Sam said: “I started off making soap on my kitchen table and selling at local markets. The range of products grew in response to customer feedback. I began to develop a full range of natural, vegan, cruelty-free skincare. In early 2017 we moved production into a unit at Portsmouth Enterprise Centre, which the city council run to support small businesses. Just over a year later, we’re ready to take the next step and open our own retail store!”

The Southsea Bathing Hut store is sited at 2C Albert Road, opposite skate apparel retailer Bored of Southsea. Seek out the signature aquamarine green façade and you won’t miss it!

With the launch of her store, Sam approached us at TLMedia for help with rebranded packaging, seeking the creativity of our in-house design team. The result is a beautiful selection of fresh bottle labels and box designs for Sam’s soaps, lotions, and candles.

A trifecta of nautical ornaments (anchors, waves), antiquity (a classically-inspired frame), and modern photos and type does well to represent a brand which exists in the past and the present of a seaside city.

Samantha added: “I’m so excited to be opening on Albert Road. It feels like a perfect home for us, surrounded by truly independent local businesses of all kinds. Our brand is proudly local. But we won’t just be the only fully natural skincare store in Portsmouth — we’ll be the only one in a 30-mile radius. So I hope, as word spreads, we can help to attract shoppers from further afield into our great city.”

The Southsea Bathing Hut apothecary stocks Samantha’s full range, including products made using local botanicals and seaweed. All Southsea Bathing Hut products will be created on-site in the shop’s skincare kitchen.

Samantha has some exciting plans up her sleeves for a programme of evening workshops in this space. “Opening this shop is the next step on what has been a tough but incredibly rewarding journey. There will be many more developments to come. Right now, I’m really looking forward to welcoming local people in and helping them to find the natural option that’s best for their skin.”
