New Theatre Royal
The historic New Theatre Royal’s latest refurbishment project, costing over £4.5 million, was completed towards the end of 2015 — restoring its unique architectural features, whilst at the same time bringing the theatre into the 21st Century.
Included in the work was the installation of a state of the art fly tower system — built over a new brand new 10 meter deep stage. The auditorium was increased in size from 500 to 700 seats, and at the rear of the new stage construction of offices, dressing rooms, and the new Anthony Minghella Creative Learning Space were completed.
New Theatre Royal is an iconic Victorian building in the heart of Portsmouth, and is one of the remaining theatres designed by renowned architect Frank Matcham. The theatre is a registered charity and relys on the generous support of funders, friends, donors, and sponsors to continue its work on and off stage and in the wider community.
The theatre shows an eclectic mix of events throughout the year including hit West End shows, shakespeare productions, comedy nights, musicals, live music, businesses conferences, community ventures, educational events, and much more.
Caroline Sharman, CEO at the New Theatre Royal, commented to say: “The revival of New Theatre Royal is about much more than the restoration of the beloved, historic building — it is about supporting the creation of jobs, driving traffic to local businesses, and developing a new state-of-the art space for the community to enjoy.
“New Theatre Royal will become a destination for local people and visitors alike, and provide real community benefits in the process.”
Opening times at the New Theatre Royal vary depending on the shows and events taking place at the theatre.
